A Thrilling Victory Over Abingdon Prep
In what can only be described as an enthralling display of prep school rugby, our U11D/E team emerged victorious with a final score of 10-6 against a resilient Abingdon Prep. This game, divided into four quarters, showcased the sheer determination, skill, and passion our young players possess, even with several of our teammates unable to join us due to illness.
The match started at a breathtaking pace, with Moulsford swiftly seizing control. It was Winckworth who opened the scoring, darting through the Abingdon defence after a precise pass from T Richards on the left flank. However, maintaining our shape proved to be challenging, despite our numbered system. Abingdon capitalised on our momentary lapse, scoring two tries down both the flanks.
Fletcher, showcasing his prowess, levelled the score by weaving his way through the centre of the pitch after Linares created space with a mesmerising sidestep. As Abingdon kicked the ball during open play, it ignited a spark in our team. Unfortunately, the temptation to kick was too strong, and our misplaced kicks allowed Abingdon to take a 5-2 lead going into the break.
At halftime, the coaching team of Mr. Skinner and I advised our boys on the importance of maintaining their shape and passing on the move after the tag. We emphasised the need to avoid stopping with the ball to maintain momentum and play the opposition offside if we support the runners..
The second half saw a resolute Moulsford side. Thomas's audacious chip and run paid off as he collected his own kick and scored unopposed. Abingdon managed to retake the lead, despite fantastic defensive efforts
by Miron-Canosa and J Richards who made countless tackles to keep their side in the game.
However, something remarkable happened during the latter stages of the game. It was as though the stars aligned, and our boys executed our instructions flawlessly. They tore Abingdon apart, scoring seven unanswered tries and leaving the opposition deflated. There were smiles all around in our red and gold jerseys as the boys turned over possession and displayed their free-flowing rugby style with confidence.
Houghton's fantastic solo run, Dixon's incredible diving effort, Winchworth's last-minute heroics, Fletcher's brilliantly deceptive dummy pass, and Fletchers ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ style spin in the corner were wonderful tries to witness. Thomas's pair of beautifully worked tries showcased the transformation of our team. It was a moment to remember, and the boys made it into the Moulsford history books with their outstanding performance to turn the game upside down.
Mr. Skinner and I couldn't have been prouder of our boys' reaction and commitment. They displayed grit, determination, and exceptional listening skills to turn the game around. We eagerly anticipate the arrival of Dragon this weekend, hoping our boys can replicate their remarkable form from the last 20 minutes for the entire season. If they do, it will undoubtedly be a season to remember.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the boys for their positive attitude and commitment to the game. Additionally, I appreciate Mr. Skinner for his enthusiasm, coaching expertise, and unwavering positivity both before, during, and after the fixture. This match was truly one to remember, and we're excited about what the future holds for our talented team.
